IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carole Mae
Roberts Buchwald
October 22, 1931 – November 10, 2021
Carole Mae Roberts Buchwald (90) left us on 10 November 2021 with loving family with her at the end. She left us without pain or suffering. She was God's very own and His devoted servant. She was a loving mother and wife and will be much missed and remembered.
Carole was the daughter of Colonel Everette Roberts and Lucille Schulz Roberts. She was born in Oshkosh, WI on 22 October 1931. A Soldier's daughter, she attended 6 different high schools while moving with her dad. She graduated from Oshkosh State Teachers College. She taught for two years, kindergarten in Wisconsin and first grade in Highland Falls NY. There she met her true love, Donald Montgomery Buchwald. On 2 July 1955, they married at Camp Douglas Wisconsin. She had joined the Army. After Don's initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia, it was off to Germany. There their first two children were born at the Army Hospital in Frankfurt, Donald Roberts Buchwald and Lucille Catherine Buchwald. On their return to Fort Riley, Kansas their third child was born, James Everette Buchwald. Margaret Carole Buchwald was born at West Point, NY. A strong and resilient Army wife, Carole nurtured their children through Don's two combat tours in Vietnam and Laos. Don's final military assignment was at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM. Carole as President of the Roswell Symphony Orchestra Guild led the efforts to produce the first edition of "Savoring the Southwest", a perennial favorite cookbook that has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in support for the symphony. She was an advocate and teacher in the lay order, Daughters of the King, helping to start many local chapters and serving in leadership positions, including President of the Order in the diocese of Arkansas. She defended the independence of the Order from the Episcopal Church when the House of Bishops of that denomination created a schism within the church. 2006 saw their move to York County to be near their youngest son and his family. She was a member of St. Timothy's Anglican Church. Farewell Good and Faithful servant. Hold high the Cross.
She is survived by her greatly loved husband, COL Donald M. Buchwald, U.S. Army, Retired; her son, COL Donald R. Buchwald, U.S. Army, Retired (Ellie); her devoted daughter and caregiver, Lucy Buchwald; her son, LTC James E. Buchwald, U.S. Army, Retired (Peggy); and her youngest child Maggie Landis. Her nine grandchildren: Donald J. Buchwald, Katy Buchwald, Christy Ingell, Andy Buchwald, Kevin Buchwald, Sam Landis, Rachel Landis, Luke Landis, and Tommy Landis. And, her great-grandchild: Sadie Ann Ingell. She is preceded in death by her parents COL and Mrs. Everette Roberts (Lucille Schulz); her in-laws COL and Mrs. Donald F. Buchwald (Catherine Montgomery); and her son-in-law COL Steve Landis. Her Memorial Service will be held at St. Timothy's Anglican Church, Poquoson on 26 November at 11:00. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. Timothy's Anglican Church, Poquoson.
