Carol Sue Tyler was born on March 3, 1939 in Phoebus, VA and was a lifelong resident there until her death on Monday, June 22, 2026. She retired from Old Point National Bank and was known as the voice of Old Point. If you called, you heard her cheerful voice stating the salutations of the day (i.e. “Good morning, Old Point National Bank, today is Mickey Mouse’s birthday!) Carol Sue was the first woman to join the Phoebus Golf League and served as treasurer for many years.
Carol Sue loved to garden, play golf, and attended the annual Hampton Cup Regatta, during which she was known to place a few bets on the races. She volunteered for Oakland Cemetery, the Hampton Cup Regatta, and many local festivals. She was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday school when her children were young and continued to participate in the church until her death. She loved to be around people and enjoyed life!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl August Hellman, Jr., and Edith Fetters Hellman, her husband, John Benjamin Tyler, and her brother Carl August Hellman, III. Survivors include her daughter, Charlene Tyler Runner (John); her son, Timothy Jay Tyler (Donna); her sister-in-law, Jackie Hellman; a niece, nephews, and cousins. Carol Sue was blessed with 2 step grandsons, John Miles Runner, II and Chris Isaac Runner (Anna); and great-grandchildren, Ichrio, Yamato, Sarah, Seneca, and Isaac Runner.
The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 Thursday, July 2, 2026, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Friday, July 3, 2026, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
