Carmon "Sap" Rochelle, age 82, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017. Born on June 28, 1934 in Tarboro, NC, he was a resident of Hampton for 48 years.
Carmon was a veteran of the Korean War, he earned several medals; the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medals and Air Force Commendation Medals. He served 4 years in the U.S. Army and 16 years in the U.S. Air Force before his retirement in 1971. After Korea he was stationed in Japan where he met his bride and beloved wife of 63 years. Carmon pursued his love for education and graduated from Old Dominion University in 1978. He retired in 1997 after a successful career as an accountant for the Army Civil Service.
In his retirement, Carmon enjoyed frequenting several favorite places and formed close friendships: coffee at La Bodega Hampton, Langley Air Force Base Commissary, BX and barber shop, Sun's Jewelry & Clock, annual New Year's Eve celebrations at Musasi, monthly luncheons with the "pool girls", Langley Federal Credit Union where he would get $2 bills to circulate, and the Pilots games which he enjoyed with family and friends. Carmon was also a Civil War buff.
Carmon was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Linnie Mae Rochelle, and his brothers, Robert G. Rochelle, Jr. and Cecil Rochelle. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Noriko Fukui Rochelle; daughters, Kathleen "Kat" Bowman and husband David, Nora Jean "Jeannie" Rochelle-Revell; son, Charles "Chuck" Rochelle and his wife Patty; brothers, Jack Rochelle and his wife Betty, Curtis Rochelle and his wife Catherine, and Dennis Rochelle and his wife Rosemarie; sister-in-law, Iris Rochelle; grandchildren, Miles Hamrick, Karla Hamrick, John Rochelle and his wife Rachel, and Steven Rochelle; great-grandson, Ethan Hamrick; Nieces from Japan, Akemi and Toshiko. He has extended family in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia and Japan.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm with Military Honors at 7:00 pm on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton VA 23666.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
