Loving husband and wonderful dad Carl Kernel, 85, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2014. Born in Garrison, WV, he had been a resident of Hampton since 1953. Carl served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He then worked for Newport News Shipbuilding as a Pipefitter, but retired as an Inspector in 1991 after 38 years. He was also a member of Liberty Baptist church. Carl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shelby E. Kernel; daughters and their spouses, Carol Sue and Dan Quann of Grottoes, VA and Barbara Jean and Alan Shupe of Hampton; sisters, Geraldine Anderson of Lynchburg, VA and Jeanene Smith of Canton, OH; grandchildren, Deidre, Erica, Meghan, Alan Jr., Faith and Candace; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted 1:30 PM Saturday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in downtown Hampton, by Pastor Joe Hunt. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Alan and Barb Shupe.
