Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our son Bryan "Austin" Savage. Austin is survived by his parents, Duane Alan Savage, of Hampton; Mary Johns-Savage and Scott Hendrix, of Smithfield;  brothers Nathan and Evan Savage; step-siblings Geoff (Jen), Jon, Lane, and Seth Hendrix; girlfriend Kristina Burgess; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Savage of Tampa, FL, Bobbie W. Young of Mechanicsville, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Johns of King William, and Betty Jo Hendrix of Smithfield. He is also survived by aunts/uncles Mr. and Mrs. Rick Lawson, Mr. and Mrs. Todd Pitts, Lenny Throckmorton and Donna Young, and many cousins. Austin was born and raised in the Grandview area of Hampton. He began playing tee ball at the age of 4, alongside his lifelong best friends Trevor Smith, Liam Bellows, and Dakota Schakel. He went on to play baseball with Phoebus Little League throughout his youth and represented them in the state championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014 under Coach Butch Bunting. He also played for Kecoughtan High School and was widely known as the "10 Man." He was an avid and skilled hunter, fisherman, and dog lover. He spent countless hours running and training his walker hounds in preparation to win his many trophies with Fanny girl. Austin was employed by Henrico County Public Schools as he was in the Maintenance Dept. at Varina High School. Austin found great joy in his work and frequently talked about his love for his supervisor Gary Blow, staff, and students. To him it was not just a job but a family. In the wake of this tragedy, countless residents and agencies in Surry, Isle of Wight, and all over the Hampton Roads area have come together to show love and support to our families. They've given so much of their time, energy, and resources to bring Austin home. The community prayed with us, searched property lines, opened their doors, and continually let us know they wouldn't stop until Austin was found. A simple "Thank You" does not feel like it's enough, but from the bottom of all of our hearts, THANK YOU! Our boy is home and we are at peace. Specifically, we would like to thank Capt. Milton Robinson and his team of the VDGIF, Dep. Donnell Stewart of the Surry Sheriffs office, Virginia State Police, James City County, and Virginia DOT Jamestown-Scotland Ferry who relentlessly searched, comforted us, and were available anytime we needed them. Your dedication is something to be admired and we are forever grateful. To the Surry Seafood Company who opened their doors daily for all of the family, fed us, supported us, and wrapped their arms around us on our worst days: You embody the definition of community and compassion and we thank you. In honor of Austin's life, there will be a memorial service at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton on March 16th at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Surry County Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue squad by contacting Ray Phelps, Emergency Services Coordinator, by email (phelps@surrycountyva.gov) who also were extremely instrumental in bringing Austin home or to your local Volunteer Emergency Services Dept.
