Robert J. Smith, 91, fell asleep at peace in his home on November 5, 2021.

Bobby was born to Emett Spencer Smith and Jennie Maguire Smith in Newport News, VA on January 26, 1930. He graduated from Newport News High School in 1948. Bobby was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the US Air Force from 1948-1953. He joined the Hampton Fire Department in 1953 and served until 1985, after which he formed and operated Beacon Electrical Construction Company until 1997.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jim Smith and Bill Smith; one son, Edward Smith; and one grandson, Shawn Ferrell. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Smith; a daughter, Ruth Johnston (Roger); son, Robert Smith Jr. (Judy); daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith; grandchildren, Hayley Smith, Matthew Smith, Casey Wygans (Phil); and two great-grandchildren, Finn and Aubrey Wygans.

Bobby excelled at loving and caring for his family.

An active member of First United Methodist Church Fox Hill, he served in many capacities. The Men's Club and Boy Scouts were especially dear to him.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, November 12, 2021 with interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church Friday prior to the service from 1-2 pm.
