John “Billy” Schwartz passed away surrounded by loved ones on July 11, 2026. Billy was born in Hampton on September 24, 1932, to parents John Wesley & Virginia Estelle Ferrell. Billy was always a hard worker; his first job was as a paper and telegraph delivery boy. He soon followed in his father’s footsteps and joined Hampton Fire Company, where he remained an active member well into his 80s. Billy was a proud member of the Navy Seabees MC6, then headed to NASA apprentice school, graduating in 1960. Retirement didn’t suit Billy and he focused on his successful electrical contracting business, JWS Electric, for many years. Billy enjoyed attending presentations and exhibits at the Hampton History Museum, volunteer fire company meetings and dinners, fireman conventions, and Navy Seabee reunions. He was an active member of Fox Hill Road Baptist Church, serving in many different positions at the church and serving on multiple mission trips. He enjoyed traveling with Jean, Robbie, and Carolyn; a favorite trip of his was to the Panama Canal. He loved working in his shop and riding his John Deere around his property, keeping it beautifully maintained, crabbing, fishing, boating, and hanging out with family and friends.
Billy is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Greg (Diann) and Sherri (Chuck); brother, Robbie (Carolyn); grandchildren, Sarah, Emily (Sam), and Jeremiah; great-grandchildren, Hannah, James, Teddy, and Forest; and many extended family members.
The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Monday, July 20, 2026 from 1-2PM. A funeral service will begin at 2PM officiated by Dr. Nathan Cecil. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park with military and fire department honors.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Fox Hill Road Baptist Church in honor of Billy. 335 Fox Hill Rd. Hampton, VA 23669.
