Obituary

Betty V. Ammons Collins, 89, died Sunday, April 24, 2016. The daughter of the late W.A. Ammons and Lillian Stacy Ammons, she was born and raised in Hampton where she worked for the civil service at Fort Monroe for a number of years, but her greatest joy was being a homemaker with an immaculate home. Betty was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church, the Progressive Sunday School Class, the Lois Lane Circle, the Central Lunch Bunch, and the Central Singers.
Preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Collins, her son, Dale S. Collins, her sister, Jackie A. Downing, and her step-mother, Helen Ammons; survivors include her daughter, Bonnie G. Collins; her son, John Wesley "Jay" Collins, Jr.; three grandchildren, Tiffany M. Keller (Russell), John Wesley Collins, III (Natasha) and James H. "Jamie" Collins (Betsy); three great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; two step-sisters, Felicia Messick and Rosalie Cave (John); and a step-brother, Felix Weinhold (Elois).
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Central United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at church beginning at 10:00 AM.
The family would like to thank Sentara Nursing and Rehab for the loving care given to their mother throughout her illness.
