Bettie G. Saunders, 88, was born on August 26, 1926, middle child and sister to six brothers in Durant, Oklahoma. There she met the love of her life, Vernon W. Saunders, a Navy Chief from Virginia, and they were married on June 27, 1944. After the war they moved to her new, lifelong hometown, Hampton, Virginia, to start a family. Bettie filled her life as a loving mother and skilled homemaker, a Cub Scout den mother, a prize winning pie maker, a prolific seamstress, a multiple term PTA president, a "granddaughter taxi service", and an active member of Northside Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Vern/'Grandaddy', and her son, Vernon Saunders, Jr.. Bettie will be greatly missed by her loving family. She leaves daughter, Karen Mason, and son-in-law Steve Mason, and grandchildren; Sara Keely Mason, Kelly Michelle Mason, Ethan Burnette, and Erin Mason Sage and her husband Mike Sage, and Lora and Allison Saunders. Gran' was thrilled to know and love her newest family member, great-grandson, Cole Samuel Sage. Bettie, with an "i-e", never met a stranger, was a friend to all she knew and enjoyed many interests. She loved to bake and cook for her family whether it be at home or over a camp stove. Boating, camping, and water skiing were her favorite ways to spend summer weekends and vacations as her children grew up. She and family would also make memorable summer road trips to be with her beloved Oklahoma family. Bettie was an excellent dress and dance costume maker and she was an active member of Northside Church's Philothean class and the K.I.T. women's group. Although she believed her most important life's work was wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Bettie also served as a census taker, an election poll official, a fitness studio instructor and a substitute teacher. Bettie was part of "The Girls" at Northampton Convalescent Center and under their wonderful care for the last two years. Bettie loved her life...and we loved her. Bettie peacefully passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The family will receive friends from 11:00AM - 12:00PM, Friday, August 14, 2015 at R.
