Betsy Ann Forbes Tignor passed away peacefully on July 14,2026, just two days shy of her 94th birthday. Betsy was born in Farmville, NC on July 16, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Earl Forbes and Anne Lawrence Burnette Forbes. She was a graduate of Hampton High School where she was a cheerleader, and played the clarinet in the marching and concert bands. Betsy married her high school sweetheart Hunter Alexander Tignor, and they were happily married for 40 years. Betsy worked at Fort Monroe for several years before her children Julie and Anne were born. She was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church, a member of the Robert Raikes Sunday School Class and the Irene Weston Circle. Betsy was a member of the Woman's Club of Hampton, and a long-time weekly volunteer in the gift shop at the Sentara CarePlex Hospital. Betsy was a very loving and caring wife and mother, and she was a joy to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Betsy loved spending time with her family, playing bridge and tennis, crossword puzzles, and attending plays and other performances. Betsy was blessed with many friendships and four especially dear, lifelong friends - her sister, Jean Carroll, Gloria Fisher, Nancy Quinn and Barbara Blanks.
Betsy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hunter Alexander Tignor, her sister, Jean Forbes Carroll, her nieces, Faith Anne Morgan and Jeannie Belk, and nephew, Craig Bryant.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Julie Tignor Lewis and her husband Thomas Roy Lewis, and Anne Hunter Harrington and her husband James Douglas Harrington; 3 grandsons Hunter Alexander Lewis and his wife Katie Elizabeth Snow - Lewis, Matthew Thomas Lewis and his wife Samantha Jane Lewis and Jackson Danforth Harrington; 4 great-grandchildren Hayden, Laityn, Briar and Gentry; niece Ann Wilkie; nephews Dean Carroll, David Walsh and Lee Walsh.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church in Newport News, VA on Tuesday, July 21 at 12:30 pm.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at The Chesapeake Retirement Community for many years of wonderful care.
Memorial donations may be made to Central United Methodist Church or Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.
