Obituary

Barbara Jean Tromly, age 79, died peacefully at her home in Hampton, Virginia, on January 6, 2026, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Barbara was born on March 26,1946, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her family later moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and then to Savannah, Georgia, where she spent much of her youth. She attended St. Vincent's Academy in Savannah and graduated in 1964. Barbara went on to attend the University of Georgia, earning a degree in elementary education in 1968. She remained close throughout her life with her sorority sisters and her lifelong friends from Savannah.

Barbara taught fifth grade for five years in Savannah, Georgia, and Woodbridge, Virginia. She later devoted herself fully to her family, whom she loved deeply.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Lt. Col. Gene A. Tromly, USMC (Retired), and by her children: Michelle (Eric), Brian (Sarah), Kevin (Samantha), and her son Christopher, who preceded her in death. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Ethan, Emily, Hunter, Addison, Christian, and Fletcher.

Barbara is also survived by her siblings Fred, Richard, Michael, Robert, Karl, Lois, and Dan, and was preceded in death by her sister Marie and her parents Frederick and Jean Muller.

To her children, Barbara was a kind, loving, and resilient mother who championed and supported them at every stage of life. To her grandchildren, she was the matriarch of the Tromly family, deeply generous, steadfast, and full of quiet strength.

A woman of deep Roman Catholic faith, Barbara attended Mass up to four times a week and faithfully volunteered for the past fifteen years counting weekly church offerings. She was also a devoted lover of animals and always shared her home with cats and a dog who brought her great joy.

Barbara will be deeply missed by her family, her many friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the coming weeks at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hampton, Virginia. Barbara was cremated and will be laid to rest alongside her beloved son Christopher at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Newport News, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's memory may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
