Nita Hartung passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 21, 2022.  Nita was a lifelong resident of Hampton and upon graduation from Hampton High School, began her Civil Service career as a secretary and clerk at Fort Monroe.  She retired from the Cadet Command at the Fort in 1989.

Nita loved to dance.  She was an avid Square Dancer and Clogger, having danced with the Square Edges, Tidal Waves and the Kountry Kickers for many years.  She loved only more her pets and her family.

Nita is survived by her husband, Richard Hartung; daughter, Karen Williams; stepson, Stephen Hartung; grandson, David Williams (Olivia) and numerous nephews and nieces; Brother-in-Law, Leroy Kemery and two Sister-in-Laws, Millie and Marianne Sherman.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon Sherman Sr. and Audrey Sherman McDaniels; brothers, Leon Sherman Jr. & John Calvin Sherman; and sisters, Helen Kemery, Laura Royall and Evelyn Mason.

A funeral service will take place at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at R Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23669 with burial to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends and visitors at the funeral home on, Monday September 26 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.  Memorial contributions should be made to a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the loving care and service provided by her caregivers in the memory care unit at Gloucester House and also to Corinne Hale who cared for Nita at home.
