Obituary

Armand Michael Giglio passed away in his adopted home of Hampton, Virginia.  He was 69 years old.  Born in Bethesda Maryland, he was raised in White Plains, New York and graduated from Woodlands High School in 1972.  He received a bachelor of science degree in Communications from Indiana State University in 1976 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy.  He served as a personnelman before receiving his commission.  While at Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island, he met his wife of 43 years, Carol Giglio, née Schaub, and they were married at Sacred Heart parish in South Natick, Massachusetts in 1980. He served as a surface warfare officer and public affairs officer at various stations before leaving Naval service in 1987, when he and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, which he would call home for the next 36 years.  He became a middle school social studies teacher within the Diocese of Phoenix, primarily at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Glendale, Arizona, before retiring in 2013. In 2023, he and his wife relocated to Virginia, which his mother's family has inhabited for 15 generations.

Mike had a lifelong passion for learning; he enjoyed mastering Spanish and was a voracious reader and observer of current affairs.  He was also an avid sports fan, particularly of his hometown New York teams, and of Ferrari Formula One racing inherited from his father.  He had an encyclopedic knowledge of sports and could recall the most obscure fact, figure or statistic in an instant.

Above all, Mike was a family man.  To be a Giglio meant everything to him, and his close friends were fortunate to enjoy the same confidence, fierce loyalty, and shared joy that he so abundantly gave his own blood. He had no greater ambition than to be the best husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle and friend that he could to those who were fortunate enough to claim him as their own.  He took life in stride, enjoying simple pleasures and wanting nothing more than the love of those around him; love that he generously, innocently, and joyfully returned.

A wake will be held from 5PM until 7 PM on Monday, June 3rd at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23669, with a Rosary service at the conclusion.   A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1PM on Tuesday, June 4th at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Church, 7 Frank Ln, Fort Monroe, VA 23651.  The Rites of Committal and Interment will follow at 3PM at St. Mary's Cemetery, 3000 Church Street in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife Carol, daughter Melissa Bowers, son Christopher and wife Madeline Giglio, son Douglas Giglio and wife Kristie MacLean, and grandchildren Eva Bowie Giglio, Christopher Joseph "Kitt" Giglio II, Michael Stephen Giglio, and Fiona Lynn Giglio, as well as his sisters; Lisa and husband John Ariano, Carla and husband Dr. Mark Haugan, and Nina and husband Paul Dinardo, as well as his close cousin Stephen Digilio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Armand and Shirley, née Smith, and his much beloved niece Elena Ariano.
