Jones, Arline Elizabeth (Brooks), devoted mother and wife, a longtime resident of Hampton, VA., died December 7, 2014 at the age of 94. Born on November 10, 1920 in Gaston County, North Carolina, Arline was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur (Bill). Both Wilbur and Arline had been members of Fox Hill Road Baptist Church for nearly 50 years. Arline is survived by her 3 sons Wilbur Jr. of Waterford, MI. Michael (VA Beach) and James (Hampton), 2 grandchildren, Jennifer Jones-Newton and James Jones Jr, 3 great grandchildren, Abigail, Claire and Peyton of Kalamazoo, MI. Arline was a talented singer in her youth and sang with the "Major Bowes Original Amateur Hour", a popular radio show of the 1930s and 1940s. Her musical talent was evident in her 3 sons who also became professional musicians. It was her support and encouragement that spurred them to greater achievements. Born and raised on Spencer's Mountain near Gastonia, NC., Arline was truly a southern girl well known for her gregarious nature and country cooking. She was a perfect wife and mother having raised [what seemed like] 3 generations of sons. She stood by them and supported them in their individual pursuits. Her life was dedicated to providing her family with an atmosphere of caring, love and encouragement. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Fox Hill Road Baptist Church, 335 Fox Hill Rd, Hampton, VA 23669 at 2:00 PM. Arline will be interred with her husband of 70+ years at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
