Garner Deel, 85, passed away on January 2, 2019. A native of Dickenson County, VA he retired from the Hampton Sheriff's Department after 28 years. His true passion was farming and gardening, and could often be found tending to his chickens and goats if he wasn't spending time with his loving family. He loved his 2nd Sunday of the month family meals. His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren, who he loved to tell jokes to. A renowned dancer, he was known as "dancing grandpa" among his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Shenia Wong, Teresa Joyner, Aleta Canady, Tammy Funk, and Amber Barrack; sisters, Vina Reilly, Corneil Michaels, Sharon Patton, and, Debbie Deel; brothers, Dean Deel, Carter Deel, Dwight Deel, Dave Deel, and Hubert Deel; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 6-7:30PM. A graveside service will be held at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk on Friday, January 11 at 10AM. A celebration of life service will be held at Waters Edge Church, Hampton Campus on Friday January 11 at 12PM.
