Archie Vern Deel, 86, freed of his bed, walked into eternity on Friday, October 31, 2014. Born in Nancy, VA, he had been a resident of Hampton since 1954. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Archie joined the Hampton Police Department. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1983, after 29 years. Archie was a member of Huntington Mennonite Church and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 26. Archie was preceded in death by his son, Don Parkis Deel and his wife Jeannette and their children, Sam and Amanda. Surviving Archie are his beloved wife of 66 years, Rita Deel; daughter, Camille "Candy" Leckie and her husband Gary of Spout Spring, VA; sons, Vaughn Deel of Hampton and Jeff Deel and his wife Ilse of Newport News; sisters, Elsie Edwards, Vina Reilly, Corneil Michaels, Sharon Patton and Debbie Deel; brothers, Garner Deel, Dean Deel, Carter Deel, Dwight Deel, David Deel and Hubert Deel; eleven grandchildren (Christie, Sam, Jeremy, Shannon, Albert, Levi, Lindsay, Sara, Nina and Bud), thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Monday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday at Huntington Mennonite Church by Pastor David Mishler.
