Obituary

Dr. Anjela K. Arbogast, M.D., child psychiatrist of Hampton, Virginia and formerly of Columbia, South Carolina, Christiansburg and Radford, Virginia, passed away on October 2, 2022. She is survived by her husband, David, daughter Alina, and father Kamil.

Anjela was born December 9, 1962 in Kokand, Uzbekistan to Doctors Kamil Kutuev (veterinarian) and Liliya Aimaletdinova (neurologist). She was a graduate of Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute (former Central Asia Medical Institute) in 1985 and proceeded with a residency in neurology, much like her beloved mother. She worked as a neurologist for more than 10 years before joining the Peace Corps as a medical officer, and later joined the US Embassy in Uzbekistan as a medical attaché assistant. In 2002 she applied and won a scholarship to Boston University, where she earned a Master's Degree in Public Health Administration. Her education and life in Boston left a lasting impression. She fell in love with the United States and the idea of democracy, equal rights and opportunities for women. Anjela was working for JICA and the Ministry of Health in Uzbekistan until her psychiatry residence in Roanoke, Virginia in 2007. In 2010, she began a child psychiatry and adolescence fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Mark Kilgus. During her residency, she met her future husband David Arbogast, a former United States Marshal, who became her greatest supporter until the last day of her life. For the last 10 years, Anjela served psychiatric patients in underserved areas, helping thousands of children to heal and grow in to healthy adults. She helped their parents see hope for the future and navigate their children's pain and trauma. She took each case personally and gave each child a piece of her heart. The pain and frustration these families felt dealing with their children's psychiatric diseases were too familiar to Anjela, as her own little brother struggled. She was dedicated to her patients in a manner her physician mother taught her, as well as her wonderful professors and mentors. Her patients, friends and members of her family will always remember her as a thoughtful and caring person, full of empathy and understanding.

It will be hard to forget her kindness, lovely personality, radiant smile, ringing laughter, beauty, and sense of style. She was, and always will be, an inspiration to her friends and an influence for younger generations of women, as she always was for her daughter Alina Rahimova. She was a great mother, who was always ready to do everything for the best of her child. She was a born teacher who encouraged women to succeed and persist in their achievements. Her strong spirit, dedication to her profession, love and concern for the welfare of her family and friends will be thankfully immortalized in the memory of all.
