Holmes, Sr.
December 8, 1952 – March 7, 2021
Andrew Lee Holmes was born on December 8, 1952, the sixth of thirteen children born to the union of Theodore Mildred Holmes Sr.
Reared in the Crestwood area of Chesapeake, Andrew graduated from Crestwood High School in 1971. After graduation, Andrew enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served from 1972 until his retirement in November 1996. Known for his sense of humor, Andrew was able to combine his service and love of comedy by performing with the Stars of Sounds. Often performing impersonations of the munchkins from The Wizard of Oz, Wolfman Jack, Columbo and most notably Rodney Dangerfield.
After retiring from the US Air Force, Andrew worked 10 years as a driver for Trailways/Greyhound and then transitioned into a Supervisor at Hampton Roads Transit. A devoted family man, Andrew loved spending time with his grandchildren, comedy and watching his beloved Washington Football Team.
Andrew Holmes departed this life on Sunday, March 7, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother Daniel Holmes. Andrew leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Kathleen Holmes; three children, Andrew Holmes Jr. (Charlotte), Alysia Holmes, and Carissa Holmes (Benjamin); eight brothers, Clarence (Dorothy), Theodore Jr. (Brenda), Leroy (Becky), Alvin (Lillian), Calvin (Sandra), Howard (Stephanie), James and Lorenzo; three sisters, Vivian, Mildred, and Iwanda (Raymond); five grandchildren, Amaya, Andrew III, Javon, Julian and Antonio; mother-in-law, Barbara Cunningham; brother-in-law, Warren (Mary); in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA with interment to follow in Albert G. Horton Jr Memorial State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5-6:30 pm.
