Obituary

Sarah Amanda Wilder McLean of Yorktown, VA, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2017 after a short illness. A native of Ruston, LA, she moved to Hampton, VA in 1948 when her late husband of 57 years, F. Edward McLean, took a job at NACA, soon to become NASA. She is survived by her daughter Nancy (and Ben) Edwards, her son Chuck (and Regan) McLean, her daughter Anne (and Steve) Hess, her son Stuart (and Liz) McLean, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom were with her to celebrate her 90 th birthday in July.

Mom was active as a volunteer in the community and at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Grafton, where she was a member for 51 years. A lifelong lover of books and reading, she was an instrumental part of the group that started the first privately supported and volunteer staffed library in York County in an effort to shame the county government into allocating funds for a government funded library, and she was a founding board member of the public library that resulted from those efforts. In addition to her many other volunteer activities, she delivered Meals on Wheels for decades to "the old people", as she put it, until she herself was 80.

When one person uses the word "gracious" to describe your mother to you, you take it with a grain of salt. When dozens and dozens of people over a period of many years keep settling on that word, you start to take it seriously. The world was a better place with her in it, and will notice her absence.

Mom did not want a service, and her children need no flowers. She will be laid to rest in Louisiana, next to her beloved husband, who she missed every day she lived without him. It would honor her greatly if you made a contribution in her honor to the Food Closet, 300 Ella Taylor Rd, Yorktown, VA 23692 or Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, 11011 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23601.
