Obituary

Eugene Logan, age 80, of Hampton, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his immediate family.  Born on February 5, 1940 to the late Vol Robert and Pauline Wilson Logan of Seneca, South Carolina he was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Alphas Logan and Juanita Bretz.

After years of working as a carpenter and appliance technician, he faithfully worked as a civil servant for over 20 years as an Electrician; retiring in 2001 from Fort Eustis, Newport News. He was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church, Hampton.

With his beautiful blue eyes, Gene was able to see the beauty in nature. With a notorious green thumb, he had a lifetime love of gardening and planting. He loved his family and left them with a legacy of hard work and the example of service to others. His simple prayers were for those less fortunate and he sought to help others at the expense of himself. He was known to have the physical strength of many men, always giving credit to his Heavenly Father for that blessing.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Rose Logan of Hampton; three children, Lisa L. Caldwell (David) of Gloucester, Dana M. Wilkerson (Scott) of Evington, and Brian Eugene Logan (Mackenzie) of Richmond;  and four grandchildren, Deanna Nicole Caldwell, Austin Gabriel Wilkerson, Laurel Michaela Wilkerson, and Colton Scott Wilkerson.

"Alvin Eugene Logan"

Our dad would probably not be the one who would walk you through the Roman Road to salvation or explain the theological truths of Christ.  He would however demonstrate how Christ has asked us how to love our neighbor as ourselves through his tireless dedication to his family and to others in need around him.  His years of service cutting grass at Riverdale Baptist Church and visiting lonely widows to ensure their homes were safe, to talk about their gardens, or to bring them some joy and laughter exemplifies the simple nature of the Golden Rule.  For his family, he worked tirelessly and remained dedicated to civilian service at Fort Eustis for over 20 years.  Even when we experienced the unfortunate habit of answering the phone when Fort Eustis would call for his help and as a child you would kick yourself for being the one that sent him off to work, he jumped in his car to put others over self.  We still cannot understand why we didn't get caller ID!  It must have followed the same Alvin Eugene Logan logic:  "If God wanted holes in your ears he would have put them there."

My dad is like Christ in that Christ knows our every need and he knows us intimately.  Even in his last days of lying in a hospital bed he ensured my mom's favorite imprinted dachshund paper towels were unused so that she could savor them long after his absence.

My dad is like Christ.  One of my dad's favorite things to do is bring dying plants back to life.  He would purposely set out to Lowe's or Home Depot to pick the least likely plant to survive.  He would bring it home, move it to a new pot, nurture it, and transplant it to Gloucester (aka his holy land).  Within weeks to months it could win the North American "Best Plant Award".  Our God is just like that!  He takes us from dark, nearly dead places and if we allow for his tender care he will transform us into His own reflection.  He knows us and can heal us and bring life to us in a way we never imagined possible.  My dad would not want anyone to leave this earth without knowing Christ.  His message would be simple, humble and pure in spirit.  Trust in Jesus, live each day to love your family and others, and serve!
