IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alice Carpenter
Sorrell
February 13, 1933 – October 18, 2024
2/13/1933 – 10/18/2024
Alice C. Sorrell was born at home on Buckroe Avenue in Buckroe Beach on February 13, 1933, to Audrey and Amy Carpenter. The second to youngest of five children she was raised at 215 N. Hope Street in Phoebus after the sudden death of her father in 1936. Many relatives stepped up to care for Alice and her siblings while their mother Amy went to work to support her family. Alice graduated from Hampton High School in 1951 and was married to Frank C. "Conky" Sorrell on August 25th, 1951. Alice lost her beloved Conky just six short months ago.
Alice is survived by daughters Denise Scheett (John) and Ellen Sorrell; grandchildren Kimberly Folker (Mike), Scott Sorrell (Leann), Joshua Sorrell and Dani Tatum; great-grandchildren, David Sorrell, Kaleb Folker, Jonathan Sorrell, Makenzy Folker and Matthew Sorrell. She is also survived by sister-in-law Shirley Carpenter; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, caregivers, adopted sons and daughters; and her fur baby Sandy.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 72 plus years Conky, her son David, who passed in 2004, and her siblings Harold, Juanita, Charlotte and Erma. The family rejoices in knowing they are all together once again.
Alice was what she liked to call "a kept woman" which meant she was a wife, mother and home maker. For over 40 years she made sure Conky had a great breakfast and lunch packed so he could head to the Shipyard in the wee hours of the morning. She enjoyed playing cards, slot machines, word search puzzles and baseball! Her family spent many days at local ball fields where for many years Conky, David, Scott, Kim and Dani played ball. Alice was an avid Washington Nationals fan; adored the color purple and said you could never have too many butterflies.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, October 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Ivy Memorial Baptist/Freedom Life Church in Hampton and may be watched live by clicking HERE . Dress will be casual, so feel free to wear purple, butterflies or a baseball jersey. A reception will be held at the church after the service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Peninsula SPCA, 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Newport News, VA 23601 or online by clicking HERE.
Arrangements are in the care of R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton, VA. www.rhaydensmith.com
