Alfred E. Scherrer Jr., known to family and friends as "Poppy" or "Big Al" passed away January 13, 2022 at the age of 86. He was a native of Bronx N.Y and had been a longtime Fox Hill resident. Alfred served in the US Army before beginning a long career at the Newport News Shipyard where he retired as a plant engineer after 21 years of service, where he was known for his engineering expertise. He was married to the love of his life, Arlene Scherrer, for 52 years and will be remembered as a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. The family patriarch, with an outgoing personality, he was in the middle of every party and event, often found dancing with the grandkids. After retirement Alfred devoted his time to helping others. He served with H.E.L.P in their homeless outreach programs and built handicap ramps for those in need. He was a lifelong car enthusiast and loved old Westerns.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Scherrer, his parents, and one brother, Charles. Survivors include his children, Alfred Scherrer III (Donna), Todd Scherrer, Guy Scherrer (Jeanine), and Renee Wells (Clinton); 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Richard Scherrer and John Scherrer; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 from 3-4:30PM. A funeral service will follow at 4:30PM at the church. Interment in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Pinelawn, NY later next week.
