IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Albert G.
Mittelmaier
December 27, 1948 – December 7, 2025
The best person is the one who brings peace. This was Albert George Mittelmaier. Jr., a man for all seasons who stepped into eternity and into God's arms, on Sunday, December 7, 2025, Pearl Harbor Day. Alley or Al was born December 27, 1948, at old Dixie Hospital in Hampton, VA, the youngest of 4 children, to Albert George Mittelmaier, Sr. and Mattie Mae Kaiser. He grew up, a child of Phoebus, attended St. Mary's Star of
the Sea, Benjamin Syms JHS, graduated Kecoughtan HS, Class of 1968. Al obtained a degree in Fire Science from TNCC and joined the Army serving his country proudly. Alley's lifelong passion and love from early childhood was life as a fireman, he started as a "Lantern Boy', in the Phoebus Fire Station. It was in his genes, passed down and carried forward from preceding generations, most notably from his GG Grandfather John Baulch, of NYC sent by President Lincoln to Ft, Monroe, 1862, during The War Between The States, and through this service became known as the Father of the US Federal Fire Service. Every generation, both men and women, in his family, shared in this pride of fire service to the Phoebus community, keeping it safe, thriving, and shining! Ultimately, Alley followed in his father's footsteps, who served as Fire Chief of Langley AFB, to become Fire Chief of Fort Eustis and Fort Story, VA. Upon retirement he then joined the JCCBVFD, Station 1, Toano, his home away from home, enjoying many years of service as a volunteer, among which included running the Farmer's Market, Fish Fry events, and restoring "the 48". The camaraderie of the people and his time spent there with them were the centerpiece of his existence. Additionally, his lineage, from his mother's side included such a rich heritage and deep roots in early Virginia, and locally through the Drummond, Clarke, Copeland, Hopkins, Fox Hill lines.
Alley was a quiet and humble man, but full of laughter, fun, and zest for life. Still waters run deep. He loved and cherished God, was devoted to his faith, his family, his friends, He was a true and passionate Patriot, loved his country and was ready and willing to sacrifice whatever might be required for all of these. How deeply he will be missed for so many reasons. So as a candle serves others with its light, while burning itself
out, so one's selfless service to others reflects a noble virtue. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain.
Alley was preceded in death by both of his parents and his sister Bobbie Flowers. Alley's memory will be cherished by his wife Bonnie Bridger Mittelmaier, daughter Ali Marie Mittelmaier, sisters, Sally Dail (Charles), Eva Mack (Joe), Granddaughter Nataliee Marie Mittelmaier, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to gratefully recognize and thank the staff at Charter Senior Living, Williamsburg, VA, for their incredibly devoted, compassionate care, and support, along with the Agape Care Group Hospice team who were so professional and dedicated to a comfort care focus for Alley and the family. Both were blessings to us.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 am, Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 South Armistead Ave, Hampton with interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the funeral Tuesday from 10-11:30 am.
