Obituary

"You can shed tears that he is gone…..or you can smile because he lived."

Dr. Adam S. Arnold, Jr. was born on April 28, 1922 in Danville, Kentucky and spent much of his youth in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the son of Adam S. Arnold, Sr. and Alice Hambleton Arnold.   Dr. Arnold was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Helen Smoot Arnold.  He is survived by his daughters Alicia Spencer and Pamela Paster, his son Paul Arnold and his grandsons Benjamin Spencer and Logan Paster.  Also left to cherish Dr. Arnold's memory are his nine great-grandchildren Isabella, Mya, James, Corey, Mary, Emma, Alyssa, Adam, and Philip.

Dr. Arnold was a member of Beta Sigma National Honor Society and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.  He attended West Virginia State College where he met his wife, Helen.  Upon graduation from college, Dr. Arnold was drafted into the United States Army.  His military history during World War II included campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Germany, Central Europe, and the South Pacific.

At the end of his military service, Dr. Arnold left the Army at the rank of Staff Sergeant and enrolled in the University of Wisconsin where he received a Master's of Business Administration and a PhD in Philosophy.

Dr. Arnold was a scholar and educator who served as a professor and chairman of the Business Department at Fisk University and Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee.  He was also a professor of Business Administration at Prairie View A&M University (Texas) and the University of Wisconsin, and was adjunct professor at Hampton Institute and The College of William and Mary.  Most of his professional life was spent at The University of Notre Dame. When hired as a professor of finance in 1957, Dr. Arnold became Notre Dame's first African-American faculty member at the University, where he taught for 30 years.

Upon retirement from Notre Dame, Dr. Arnold and his wife relocated to Hampton Virginia, to be near their daughters and grandsons.

Throughout his life, Dr. Arnold received many distinguished awards and authored several books and publications, but he will be remembered most for his selfless devotion to his family.

Dr. Arnold passed away on April 14, 2017 at the age of 94.  A memorial funeral service will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2150 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, Virginia on May 5th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. All are encouraged to join our family for this celebration of the life of this good man.

Dr. Arnold's children would like to thank the many friends, family, co-workers, spiritual advisors, and medical personnel for their numerous acts of kindness and assistance during the illness of their father.
